Owaka Pit saga rolls on By Georgia O’ConnorHarding FRUSTRATED battlers of the controversial Owaka Pit say the city council continues to let them down. It has been more than two months since an abatement notice expired – and there is still no sign of what action the city council will take. The abatement notice, issued on April 14 2015, said all medium density fibre had to be removed by April 13, 2016. But, as of March, only 500 of the 9000 tonnes had been removed. In April, city council head of compliance Tracey Western said the council expected to take eight weeks to determine

what options could be taken. When asked by the Western News last week what those options were, she said a report into the options had not been finalised. Resident Julie Shivas

said she had given up on believing the city council would resolve the situation. She said her local city councillors Vicki Buck and Jimmy Chen had not done enough. •Turn to page 3

News Owaka Pit saga rolls on •From page 1 The controversial pit on Owaka Rd has been a source of contention for years, and in 2013 the MDF spontaneously caught alight taking weeks to contain. “Nothing gets done, it falls on deaf ears and everyone looks the other way,” said Ms Shivas. But Cr Buck disagreed. “These are enforcement issues and they are not ones you just give an opinion on . . . they are actually about what can be done,” Ms Buck said. She said it was a legal issue and did not want to “tread on ground” that is not helpful. Cr Chen said the city council has the power to get the issue sorted and he will “push the staff” and follow up closely. “This is a legal issue and staff need more time to have an investigation and report to the community board.” Business manager Alan Edge said progress is going good and the MDF is still getting removed. “The city council is happy so I am happy,” he said. Service centre decision will be made today By Georgia O’ConnorHarding A BID to stop a temporary Riccarton service centre possibly going into Upper Riccarton will be made today. Riccarton-Wigram Community Board deputy chairwoman Helen Broughton (left) will make a notice of motion at its meeting reaffirming the board wishes for the service desk to remain in central Riccarton. In December last year, the community board recommended to city council the service centre stayed in either central Riccarton or the Upper Riccarton Library. The recommendation was changed on the February 11 community board meeting to have a service centre just in central Riccarton. But Ms Broughton said there is an impression from city council staff they want the

service centre to be moved to the Upper Riccarton Library. The land of the current service desk housed on 199 Clarence St will be sold and construction of the new Riccarton Community Centre will not be finished until 2018. City council’s head of services Sarah Numan said the city council is aiming to have the property on the market by early August. In February the Western News reported the city council wanted to shift the service centre out of the area but the community board disagreed

with the proposal. A city council report shows Riccarton Service Centre had 6839 transactions between July last year and June this year. It had the second highest number of transactions in the last year behind the Shirley Service Centre. Veterinary practice

FROM FIJI Thought I’d write a slightly different article…. I’m in Fiji for ITF tennis with my son Dylan for 2 weeks and I’ve never been to Fiji before. An interesting, warm place with splendid people. I’ve met some great folk and seen some great tennis and seen plenty of animals I so want to help. We have had our share of ups and downs on the tennis court ( cramping and a pulled hamstring) and at our resort ( leaking air conditioning units, power cuts, no Wifi as promised), but all has been sorted eventually and has made for a real travel experience, one I’ll never forget. We are a reasonable drive from the tennis so it’s been a 45 minute car drive filled of daily adventures. We have had goats and cows just traverse the road in front of us, speeding cars and then ones that sit at 35km/hour and you can’t pass them as passing lanes are rare. We have seen a road traffic accident with fatalities sadly. Fijians just aim casually along the sides of the roads waiting to be picked up for work or getting places on foot. Everyone looks happy and relaxed in sparkling clean attire, yet there is brown dust everywhere that infiltrates everything. The school children look fantastic in often starched white uniforms and clamber on the open aired buses, arms hanging out the sides, laughing. The drivers are hugely considerate, almost dangerously so, slowing right down to let cars cross in the middle of a busy open road. No one is in a hurry and everyone is up and rearing to go at 6.30am, waiting to be picked up for work. Not many people here own cars and taxis are everywhere. The dogs touch my heart though. There are so many that aimlessly wander all over the place – in towns, sides of roads, the tennis center and outside homes. No one takes responsibility for them as the breeding is rampant and out of control. None are desexed so there are puppies everywhere. They are scarily thin, bloated with worms, crawling with fleas and ticks and hungry. They still manage a tail wag though and I’ve even managed to pat a few. I’m feeding them bread and one square meals and they are so gently accepting food. Many of them have sores all over their bodies, no hair and many are feeding puppies. Ive hardly seen any cats, except ones that have unfortunately been squashed on the roads. The grazing tethered cows look friendly but on approaching them, they show me the whites of their eyes and lower their heads to charge. I have met a local Fijian Architect who is building a Veterinary Hospital In Nadi, funded

by a wealthy American couple who want to help the companion animals here. There is a small SPCA clinic in Lautoka but no surgeries can be performed there. The only clinic is in Suva where short anaesthetics can be performed. I think Steve and I would be keen to come back here and offer our expertise and help these animals and train some of the vets here. We’d bring equipment and supplies with us next time. I have befriended a fantastic group of Fijian children at the Lautoka tennis club. They are aged between 7 and 12 years of age and get tennis coaching for free on Sundays, racquets and balls provided by the club. None of them have shoes to play in, most are from very poor families and tennis is an expensive sport. I went out and bought 10 pairs of sports shoes of different sizes for them to be kept at the club and used for the children that need them. They were all so grateful. Dylan is back in August so I’ll send back most of the boys old tennis tops for the kids to enjoy playing in. If they progress at tennis it could be a way out for these children. I won’t forget my 2 weeks here. Everybody thought I wouldn’t like Fiji at all, but the openness and genuine friendliness and interest shown by these people have made this experience one I’ll never forget. I feel Steve, Isaac and I can make a difference to these people in educating them on respecting and caring for their pets, when we next return. It makes you really realize how priviledged and wealthy we all are. Giving back a little feels good. Just an update on Indie, the White German Shepherd, who managed to deliver 8 little wriggley white pups on her own ( 6 boys and 2 girls) on 16th June. All are doing well, she is an exceptional mother and my friend Mala is realizing how big a responsibility and job breeding is. All pups have homes – 6 will be staying in Christchurch and 2 heading North. DR Michele McMaster

Kennedy’s Bush resident Graham Townsend writes this week’s opinion piece about the lack of critical thinking when it comes to topics such as climate change I’ve spent a lifetime teaching science. If you define science to include critical thinking, I count the efforts of New Zealand as a total failure. Why? Because critical thinking is the ability to examine evidence and conflicting claims without allowing prejudices or personal interest to intrude. And critical thinking, sadly, is in seriously short supply today. This is what the pioneering psychologist William James meant when he said that “A great many people think they are thinking, when they are merely rearranging their prejudices.” An example: climate change.

Comment threads and twitter feeds are full of unsupported prejudice rather than fact. “Climate change is not happening”; “scientists are all lying to get more funding for their research”; “climate always changes, it’s not our fault”; “we are due for a new ice age so climate change is good”. People who post this rubbish ignore that fact that science is a merciless process of critically analysing both the raw data and the predictions made from them. I invite any lay-person who thinks they can do better to submit their own analysis to the global science community. Fame and possibly fortune awaits you if you can prove the current consensus wrong. So why do these denier memes refuse to die? Simply because we can’t face the conclusion that we

– all of us – are changing the climate. That unpleasant fact hits at the heart of our whole lifestyle: our love affair with cars, jet skis, quad bikes and flying. So the hands go over the ears and we start coming up with excuses and lies. Let me state this clearly: every major national science academy around the world has examined the evidence and they are all seriously concerned. So what do we do? Individual actions are not enough – we need policy changes at a national and international level. Politicians generally follow public opinion – they will do nothing until we demand action. And that won’t happen until enough of us face the truth. That brings me back to education and critical thinking. H.G Wells famously said “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe”. That’s never been truer or more urgent than today. Use your vote wisely.

Readers respond to the Western News article on the Halswell skate park Frank Stedman, 11, of Halswell – I would really like a skate park here in Halswell because I will not have to travel for a long time to get to the nearest skate park. I loved the skate park in Malaysia where I grew up, and I would’ve probably spent hundreds of fun hours in the skate park. I’m sure that if the skate park here opens, I will have the same awesome experience as I did in Malaysia. I would like a new skate park because I will be able to meet up with my friends and have some fun together, maybe learning some cool stunts in the process. I am fully aware that there may be some people who will be a nuisance because they vandalise property and act intimidating to younger kids – swearing, insulting and being a bad influence. But if some adults

can try and keep the community clean and step in to stop them from being a nuisance, then I think the skate park would be a fantastic place. Brianna Wynn, 9, of Halswell – We would really like a skate park at Halswell Domain because my brother (8) and I (9.5) don’t really play much at the playground anymore as it’s more for little kids. A skate park would mean that we wouldn’t have to scooter, skate and rollerblade on our street anymore, which can be dangerous at times. We think it would be a great for the community because it would give the older kids something to do while the young kids can play at the playground and trains. We love the Prebbleton skate park. We go there a lot and it’s awesome. I think it would be so cool to have that at Halswell Domain and all our local friends would be there, too.

Riccarton-Wigram community board members, the Templeton Residents’ Association, the Canterbury Car Club and the Christchurch Speedway Association. The Ruapuna Motorsport Park has been a ongoing issue which flared up in 2013 when resident Sara Harnett of the Quieter Please group broke down in tears and told the city council her children could not sleep. This was due to the noise from the complex. As independent chairman Mr McCallum’s role will be to review complaints, noise monitoring, review and discuss

the success of noise reduction initiatives. But he said he did not think it was appropriate to comment on his role until he had been appointed. He said he had not even been briefed by the city council on his role if he is appointed. Mr Thomson said the Canterbury Car Club will be responsible for convening the committee which will have two members appointed by the city council. Two community board members will be appointed to the committee at the RiccartonWigram Community Board meeting tomorrow.

Cup day alcohol ban on streets THE CITY council has approved a temporary alcohol ban on the streets around the Riccarton Park Raceway for New Zealand Cup Day. The temporary alcohol ban will run from 7am to midnight on Saturday, November 12. The running of the New Zealand Cup at Riccarton is one of the feature events of Cup and Show Week in the city and has attracted record crowds in recent years. But a city council release said pre-loading has become an increasing issue as more racegoers opt to buy liquor in supermarkets and off-licences and drink on the way to the racecourse. The Canterbury Racking Jockey Club and the Riccarton Park Function Centre have asked the city council to impose a temporary alcohol ban on the streets around the racecourse. The alcohol ban will apply to both sides of the streets of Yaldhurst Rd to Middlepark Rd, Epsom Rd to Racecourse Rd, Buchanans Rd to Masham Rd, and Masham Rd to Yaldhurst Rd. A similar ban was put in place for the running of the New Zealand Cup last year.

Illegal tree felling puts lives at risk PEOPLE ILLEGALLY felling trees in parks and reserves may be putting themselves and the public at risk, the city council has warned. Four large pine trees in the Westmorland East Valley Reserve were partially cut down last week without authorisation. The sawn-off branches were left piled on the ground and climbing ropes were attached to the trees which suggests those responsible conducted the felling operation from a height. The illegal tree felling operation has sparked concern because of the potential risk to public safety. City council head of parks Andrew Rutledge said the trees that were being felled were quite close to walking tracks and the main concern was that some unsuspecting

member of the public could have been injured by a falling branch. “We only allow approved contractors to do tree maintenance and felling work in our parks and reserves because that way we can guarantee they have the proper health and safety procedures in place,” he said. “We can’t allow just anyone to turn up with a chainsaw and start chopping down trees.” Mr Rutledge said if people wanted a tree removed or pruned for any reason there was a process to be followed. They could either lodge a request through the city council’s call centre or contact the city council using the free Snap, Send, Solve app. Community boards had DANGEROUS: People have been taking tree felling and pruning delegation to authorise the into their own hands in the Westmorland East Valley Reserve. removal of healthy trees.

News Inmates help feed the homeless INMATES FROM Christchurch Men’s Prison have grown more than 2300kg of vegetables and herbs, as well as 3400 seedlings, for a very worthy cause. Over the past 10 months, men from Tirohanga Paeroa Unit have built vegetable gardens, and grown and contributed vegetables and seedlings to those in need. The programme has been undertaken with assistance from charity group, Help for the Homeless. Prison residential manager Graeme Hunter said the men wanted to keep busy and do something that would make a difference for people in need in the community. “The new gardens seemed the perfect way to do something useful with the land around the unit, engage the men in a helpful

activity while they learnt useful lifestyle and, potentially, employable skills,” he said. Those who work in the garden gain credits towards a National Certificate in Horticulture qualification. The initiative has already

proved a success for one prisoner. In his mid-40s, he has a background in crop farming and market gardens. He has been involved in the project from the start and has taken on a leadership role in the gardens.

“I mentor others through the practical aspects of the course – weeding, turning soil over, planting seedlings into seed trays. Some of the men have a limited knowledge of gardening, but there is a correct way to do these things, to grow the best

produce,” he said. Help for the Homeless was founded in 2014 by Amy Burke, of New Brighton, who saw homeless people hungry, cold, or going through rubbish bins in Christchurch. “Produce from the prison gardens is delivered to [Help for the Homeless] cooks who create dishes for our locals,” Ms Burke. “We also provide support to the recently housed, including youth and any family going through hardship. This filters to schools and community organisations, depending on surplus.” The 3400 seedlings, grown as part of the NZQA horticulture course, were given to the charity for their ‘recently housed’ homeless. This will enable them to learn to live off the land, too.

Youth offenders targeted in health partnership CORRECTIONS AND kaupapa Maori health provider Purapura Whetu have partnered to deliver better health outcomes and “crime-free futures” for youth offenders. Purapura Whetu will provide a wraparound service for Maori youth offenders and their whanau, aiming to connect them

to their culture and traditions. Maori offenders make up 43.7 per cent of people on community sentences in the country. This is the first time Canterbury Corrections has partnered with a health provider specifically to provide targeted services for at-risk Maori youth offenders. Corrections Canterbury dis-

trict manager Lisa Joseph said: “We are working together to intervene and steer this group of youth toward better health outcomes and crime-free futures.” Purapura Whetu chief executive Karaitiana Tickell said its goal was to empower tangata whaiora (people seeking wellness).

“By connecting Maori youth to their culture, traditions and values of our tupuna (ancestors), we are helping them to better understand and take ownership of their mental, physical and spiritual health,” she said. It would also connect youth offenders to health support, education, employment, housing and

transport, she said. Ms Joseph said: “It makes sense in terms of both our services to take the opportunity – while these youth are on sentence – to connect them with good health practices and to also look at addressing some of the lifestyle and health issues which may impact their offending.”

Our People Young leader’s social equality vision Josiah Tualamali’i is a 21-year-old on the US Embassy Youth Council, the chairman of a Pacific youth leadership group and a Canterbury University student. Fraser Walker-Pearce talks to him about superhero shows, how he became a leader for Pasifika youth in Christchurch, and meeting NASA’s deputy director Hi Josiah. What have you been up to recently? Among other things, we organised for about 280 young people to come to the Transitional Cathedral on June 30. It was organised by some of my friends and I to generate ideas about decision-making and just gather for some food and a brainstorm session. It was a really fun night with food and ideas being shared. Sounds good. Can you tell me a bit about PYLAT? PYLAT stands for Pacific Youth Leadership and Transformation. It’s a charitable trust that supports young people in the Pacific community, and helps to make the Pacific youth aware of opportunities in the community. And you’re also part of the United States Embassy Youth Council. What exactly is that? Canterbury University and all universities in New Zealand hand-pick a number of students who are then checked by the US Embassy. So they’re gathering youth leaders who have access to different communities in the city, so the embassy can keep the finger on the pulse of youth groups in the city. So do you have meetings with the embassy often? And what happens with that information? They communicate what we tell them back to Washington, because one of Obama’s foreign policy focuses was to do a Pacific pivot, gathering up all knowledge on what’s going on in Pacific countries. The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement was part of it, but it was also about bettering relationships with Pacific communities. So there are 12 leaders in Canterbury for that, and I am one of them. We have a meeting every now and then

with different diplomats, business leaders and ex-pats. They help us, and we give them our knowledge about what’s going on. It’s kind of cool this week on Saturday, because we’re actually meeting with the deputy director of NASA, and it’s especially cool because she’s a woman. We don’t even know why we’re meeting with her! It’s especially interesting because of an event we held last week, where we were hoping to bridge gaps, like giving women equal visibility, opportunities and platforms to excel. And now we get to meet one of the top women in NASA. It’s a secret meeting which we don’t know much about. We could be talking about Mars, we could be talking about anything, it’s very exciting. What inspired you to become a youth voice for the Pacific community? I think it was probably the youth parliament that we had before the earthquakes. It was that others took the time to tell me that I could make a difference. I guess I was in the right place, at the right time. Just good people being around me. How long have you been involved with PYLAT? I’ve been chairman for three years now, so I started my second two-year term last year, after I was re-elected. Before the earthquakes in 2010, the Pacific community held a staged youth government because they noticed there weren’t many youth voices in decision-making at the time. And we loved it so much that after the earthquakes, we kind of thought, well, how do we keep it going after the earthquakes? So we made it into the trust it is now. We now have 13 trustees, with about two-thirds of that as

youth and students, and young professionals make up the rest. Are you striving to see Christchurch’s youth have a bigger input into decision making? Yes, absolutely, so what we say in PYLAT is that Pacific young people have valid information and ideas that can be useful at any level. That could be for the Government, non-government organisations, anything, but there’s a big trust element in it. It can be tough to trust that a young person can have input to these conversations, while being respectful and articulate. I really liked last year seeing the flag panel had a young person on it. You do all of this work for youth and on boards, do you have any spare time at all? Any hobbies? Yes, I really like to sing. I used to sing in a choir, but now I just

sing when I’m pottering around the flat and doing things. I also like watching TV programmes, anything with heroes really. The Arrow and Flash series are the best ones and I go to the movies a bit, too. I like to think that we don’t need a super power to do cool things in our community, and it’s cool to watch the people that we pretend we are, and do those amazing things. Where are you flatting for university? I flat in Ilam, but my family home is in Parklands. I just went back to my flat last night. It’s all a bit busy, because I also do some work on campus for Pacific young people, tutoring them to help them get their NCEA levels. It’s cool to see that Canterbury University cares about getting them over the line and offering those classes.

Oh right, so what subjects do you tutor? I tutor history, English and drama. Those were the ones I was quite good at during school. It’s also a cool project because the students can go on to tertiary education if they want, because they have the qualifications. Why were history and English your favourites at school? I really liked understanding why we’re at the place we are now through our history. Also, learning about colonisation, racism, and all of those words that get thrown around these days. It’s also quite important to me because my mum is Palagi (Samoan word for European), and my father is Samoan. So for me, it was quite hard when I was young to work out my own identity. After all the classes in history and English, I kind of learnt what was right and wrong for me through those classes. Growing up as a Pacific person, I could understand the benefits, and the strengths of those people. What high school did you attend? I went to Hillview Christian School for years 9 and 10, then to Middleton Grange School for years 11 to 13. And what primary school? I actually went to primary school in Dunedin, to Anderson’s Bay School for the first few years, then to Hillview for the other half of primary. You study history and politics at university, so what job would you have if you could just pick one and start tomorrow? I can’t give one answer to that really. I’d want to be the CEO of a company that works with Pacific people and uses the knowledge the community has taught me. I’d want to increase the participation and involvement of the community. The only problem is that I don’t know if that kind of job exits yet. I wouldn’t mind working in the university for a while, and I’m enjoying tutoring at the moment. I could definitely see myself teaching others as well.

SOUTH HORNBY School pupils have been learning life skills from the Graeme Dingle Foundation’s programme Kiwi Can. Over the past term pupils have been learning skills they need to achieve positive relations with others. To support the learning, children ended the term by creating a “friendship chair” as their community project. Graeme Dingle Foundation Canterbury regional manager Noeline Allan said the purpose of the chair is to allow children to sit in the seat as a signal that they are needing someone to play with or talk to. She said a super hero in the form of a fellow pupil will come and rescue them by inviting them to play. The original seat was donated by Goldpine. The result is a safe and inviting place that will be a haven for a lonely child who is waiting for a super hero to befriend them. Having worked to create the seat the students have much ownership of the end

News Work starts at Risingholme RISINGHOLME Community Centre is finally being rebuilt and restored after being unusable for the last five years. The Opawa building was damaged during the February 22, 2011, earthquake and has been out of use needing extensive repairs. Last month, the building was also set alight and damaged further. The fire spread through the roof and top storey of the heritage-listed building, causing so much damage that part of the upstairs will have to be deconstructed. All of the loose and fire-damaged material in the building has been removed. At the time of the fire, the city council was planning to tender out the earthquake strengthening and repair work. The fire has not changed the city council’s plan to restore the 152-year-old heritage building to its original state. Projects get $230,000 boost By Andrew King THE Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will allocate more than $230,000 to community services, trusts and churches for projects throughout the north-west. Every year the board uses its strengthening communities fund to help local organisations keep programmes running and start up new ones to benefit those in its ward. City council staff have recommended the board spend $167,015 on youth workers and co-ordinators for a number of churches, schools and trusts, $49,003 on projects throughout the northwest including four of its own and $24,500 on four organisations running costs. The board will allocate $35,403 for Celebrate Bishopdale Community Festival, Culture Galore 2017, Community Liaison Meetings, Garden Pride Awards 2017, Neighbourhood Week 2016 and youth activities and events. Board chairwoman Val Carter said it was great to be able to look around the ward and help out those who are helping others.

Under-17 basketballers best ever finish

THREE Canterbury basketballers were recognised for their performance at last week’s Basketball New Zealand Under 17 National Championships in Auckland by being named in the tournament team. Burnside High School’s Tsubasa Nisbett was the only Canterbury player to be named in the girls’ tournament team. Nisbett put up a game high 25 points in Canterbury’s opening pool match against PoriruaHutt. She then top scored again in their next pool game with 20 points in the team’s win over Gisborne. She also top scored in her team’s bottom eight quarter-final win over Southland with 21 points. “She was completely invaluable to our team. She has a lot of talent, a great attitude and a fantastic work ethic. The TaTToo Removal Company is the first in Christchurch to specialise in the removal of tattoos, and removing clients’ unwanted tattoos is their sole focus. This family business has three technicians, male and female, who have undergone extensive training and are committed to ongoing professional training to maintain their skills. Coming from beauty, hairdressing and hospitality backgrounds, they love working with people and providing a friendly and totally professional service. for whatever reason you wish to remove your tattoo, the technicians provide a fast, effective, confidential and unprejudiced service in an exclusive, private environment. Whether you are having a full tattoo removal or lightening a tattoo for a cover-up with new art, during the initial consultation your technician will take the time to fully understand your needs, relevant medical history and the history of the tattoo in question so that you get the best service possible. The q-switch laser the technicians use removes tattoos effectively. The laser emits short, nanosecond energy pulses that penetrate the tissue and shatter particles of ink pigment into fragments, which are then eliminated via the lymphatic system. While there may be some slight discomfort, it is very brief. however, ice packs and numbing cream can be provided if required.

Treatment and the number of sessions required vary depending on skin type, quality of tattoo and desired outcome, with six weeks needed between treatment sessions. for women who have had marks made on their skin during breast cancer treatment, the Tattoo Removal Company will remove these at no cost. The tattoo removal service is available seven days a week from 6am-10pm at the merivale clinic, 33 springfield Road. mention this advertisement and you are entitled to a 17 per cent discount off the first three treatments.

Among the range of tasty items available, the Halswell Bakery pies are “shaping up to become pretty famous”, she says, with good feedback on them coming from satisfied customers. “Of our 14 varieties of pie, the steak are the most popular. These include steak and cheese, pepper steak, steak cheese and bacon, and steak and mushroom. Our steak pies are full of tender, slow-cooked beef sourced from our local butcher, with a rich, flavorsome gravy, and soft flakey pastry,” Ruth says. “I don’t think you can beat a pie that has been hand crafted, just a few metres away from the counter you’re buying it from.” Chicken cranberry and brie is another flavour that many customers rave about. Hot and cold drinks are offered, with Three Llamas coffee from Peru being the bakery’s chosen brand. “We have several experienced baristas on our staff so customers can be assured they will get a great coffee every time. We also have juices, soft drinks, water and smoothies for the summer months. “We have a really great team who are fun, fast and friendly and enjoy a bit of banter with our regular customers.” Seating is available inside and out. Cold weather a pain? Say goodbye to aching joints! EvEr NOTICEd your joints aching more in winter? Studies show a strong relationship between cold, damp days and arthritic pain. Can the elements really make joints ache? In cold weather the joint capsules swell, causing pain, stiffness and inflammation. The soft tissues around the joints are less pliable so joints feel tight and sore. Sitting still is bad news for your joints. Exercise helps lubricate them to prevent pain. So wrap up, keep your joints warm and move! Too cold out? Exercise indoors with lowimpact moves. Try yoga or Tai Chi and use the Aircycle circulation booster to warm joints, keeping them flexible and strong. In the cold, our body restricts how much blood it sends to extremities. DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

Safer winter driving If you want safer and more enjoyable travelling this winter, consider these tips on how to prepare for and drive to the conditions before you’re on an icy, wet or snowbound road. For road travellers, winter can be the most dangerous time of year. Motor vehicle accidents involving wet weather, fog, ice and snow can have serious consequences, these conditions can hit anywhere and at any time during winter. The first and most important thing you must do is check your vehicle is road worthy. You may have a current WoF but it does not nescasarily mean it is safe for winter conditions. Check your tyres are in the best possible condition; tread depth, correct pressure and general wear.Ensure your lights and indicators are in perfect working order. Turn the hazard and headlights on, walk around your vehicle to make sure all lights are going. Get someone to press the brake pedal so you can check those lights are functioning. It is always worth giving your battery a little TLC before the change of the seasons. Make sure the battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free and the fluid levels are correct. If you need a new battery then replace it before it is too late. Having a clean windscreen inside and out is important, it only takes a little misting to make it next to impossible to see the road and your surroundings, a dirty windscreen is much slower to clear. an often overlooked safety feature; windscreen wipers play an essential role when it is raining

or snowing. The wiper blades should be in good condition and should clear the windscreen not smear the water around. If you turn the wipers on and you still can’t see it is probably time to change them. While you are checking your wipers check the fluid level in the windscreen washer container as well. drive slower than you normally would as it only takes a split second to lose control in wet or icy conditions. avoid sudden braking or turning manoeuvres that could cause you to skid. accelerate smoothly and brake gently. For vehicles without anti-skid

braking systems, pump the brake pedal in short rapid bursts rather than pressing long and hard to avoid skidding or sliding. In winter, especially in poor weather, double the two-second rule and leave a safe distance between you and the car you’re following.

WATCH THE ROADS THiS WiNTER

Beware of black ice. Black ice is a thin sheet of ice on the road that is dark in appearance, making it extremely hard for drivers to see. It is commonly found around waterways and lakes, more often in shady or cooler areas. Black ice can cause drivers to lose control very easily.

DRIVE TO THE CONDITIONS

Heading for the slopes? MakE surE you carry snow chains and know how to fit them correctly. Chains must be compatible with the road wheel, there are no ‘one chain fits all’ options. Make sure the chains are fitted to the driving wheels, for example a front wheel drive car means chains to the front. once fitted keep your speed under 30kmph. don’t be one of those people who drive with their head sticking out of the window because the windscreen is frosted up. keep the car warm and the windows clear. and keep an ice scraper in the car. use your highest gear when travelling uphill and your lowest downhill. drive at a safe travelling distance because it takes longer to stop on slippery roads. When travelling in fog, rain or snow, drive with your lights dipped for increased safety. avoid sudden braking, drive slowly, avoid sudden direction changes, leave large following distances, look for shiny, “wet” patches on the road they are most likely black ice.

Pack a survival kit. Include spare warm clothing, blankets, towels, first aid kit and food & water. Jumper leads, tow rope. a bag of sand or kitty litter to help with traction, and a shovel, a flashlight with spare batteries and a waterproof sheet.

A few pointers worth noting: • • • • • • •

• •

Be seen by others, drive with your lights on. drive expecting the unexpected although you maybe an experienced driver, don’t be overconfident Leave a big gap to the car ahead of you avoid sudden movements Look further ahead than normal and anticipate change Black ice is common in shaded areas, around waterways and lakes If you encounter a skid or slide, take your foot off the accelerator and turn the steering wheel in the direction the vehicle is moving to help gain control update yourself of the road conditions (aa roadwatch, Transit NZ) Warm the engine before starting any travel, and use the airconditioning to dry the interior and keep the windsceen clear If conditions are severe, stay indoors and delay your travel plans

Christchurch School of Music Ensuring a safe work place

the ChriStChurCh School of Music is a family-oriented community aimed at providing quality music education in and around Christchurch. in 2015 CSM celebrated 60 years of teaching children to love and appreciate music so why not join us and become a part of the next 60 years? CSM is a not-for-profit organisation with a strong focus on community. On a Saturday morning the whole family can find something to suit. Preschool children can start their musical journey by joining in our experiential “take Orff with Music” while older children and adults may opt for group or individual lessons on a specific instrument (including voice). Those who already play are welcome to join in one of the great ensembles which all take part in regular concerts including Saturday soirees and the popular annual Showcase Concert. Recitals where individuals can perform are also held regularly. CSM also provides a comprehensive music education to participating primary

LeArninG FirSt aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. clean. We at enviro Master, are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period. It is important to remember, when selecting an installer, the manufacturer’s warranty does not cover the installation and consumers could be responsible for any repair or damage caused to the system due to poor installation. enviro Master’s five-star installation guarantee ensures correct installation, and a demonstration so customers have an understanding on how it will best meet their needs.

Are you struggling with the heat of Summer or wanting to get organised for Winter? Get rid of dampness

in your house

NoW WItH the colder and wetter weather on its way, home owners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy for their families throughout winter. rISINg DAMP is an issue that affects many of our older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, postquake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are especially vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands

the problems caused by rising damp and are there to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight, flowable foam concrete under your timber floored home. Specially adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently, is that many owners of properties which had underfloor foam concrete installed, reported that it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd now for your free, no obligation quote and complimentary appraisal of your underfloor ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or 0508 362626 for more information.

to eNSure the quality of your air, contact the experts. Smooth-Air Products can calculate the required air exchange for your building requirement. Smooth-Air offers a wide range of ventilation equipment, from air vents to ducting for fans, for both the commercial and domestic markets. They have an extensive range of fans and ventilation components in-store but they can also provide innovative solutions tailored to differing requirements. VeNtILAtIoN This includes both the exchange of air to the outside as well as circulation of air within the building. It is one of the most important factors for maintaining acceptable indoor air quality in buildings. of poor or insufficient air intake from outside, the oxygen content decreases, humidity and dustiness levels increase. If exhaust ventilation is not provided or it is not effective, polluted air, smells, humidity and harmful substances are not removed. Low oxygen with high carbon dioxide causes stuffiness in the room and occupants can feel drowsy. Invisible harmful substances like a high content of dust and tobacco smoke are harmful and can cause various diseases. even bad smells can cause discomfort or irritate the nervous system. In summer, it’s easy to open windows for cross ventilation, however as winter approaches, we start to shut up out houses to trap in the heat and as a result, air quality can decline. It is therefore very important to ensure good air quality indoors through adequate ventilation.
